GERMANY-WWII-HISTORY-AUSCHWITZ-STONE

German artist Gunter Demnig lays "stolpersteine" or stumbling stones in Berlin's Friedrichstrasse March 27, 2010. The stones, topped with small brass plaques, are installed in front of houses where Jews who were deported to death camps during Germany's Nazi regime, lived. Demnig, who started the project in 1993, has already installed thousands of stolpersteine in cities where Jews lived in Germany and abroad. These particular stones commemorate Max Sommerfeld, Johanna Schoeneberg and Max, Philipp and Rosalie Kessler, all murdered in Nazi death camps, and were commissioned by residents living in the building that now stands where the previous building stood.
