INDIA-RESOURCES-SOLAR POWER-EARTH DAY

An Indian worker cleans solar panels fitted at Rabirashmi Abasan, a solar housing complex at Rajarhat close to Kolkata, on April 20, 2010. Consisting of 25 houses and a community hall, the complex is India's first solar housing project with each home's tiles designed to generate 2 kW of power a day, primarily for direct domestic use but feeding surplus production into the electricity grid. April 22 marks the 40th Earth Day, which urges local action and increased awareness to understand and respect the environment. India, with its 1.2 billion citizens, faces challenges from rapid urbanisation and industrialisation, such as pollution, sanitation and water supply, as well as degradation of forests and agricultural lands, and is already the world's fifth largest carbon emitter despite a low per capita share.
