US-ATTACKS-NEW YORK
RESTRICTED TO EDITORIAL USE - NOT FOR SALE FOR MARKETING OR ADVERTISING CAMPAIGN
Video grab obtained May 03, 2010 via the NYPD from a surveillance camera shows Times Square in New York May 01, 2010 just before the alert was raised and police cleared thousands of tourists from the packed theater district. A man in his 40s was caught on a security camera shedding a shirt in warm weather near a bomb car. Police studied footage from 82 security cameras around Times Square, video taken by a tourist, and evidence from the sport utility vehicle, which was packed with fireworks, propane tanks, gasoline, fertilizer and timers. Video showed the man whom New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg called a "person of interest" and city police chief Raymond Kelly said was acting in a "furtive" manner as he hurried away from the scene. While New York has been on a terrorist alert ever since the September 11, 2001 attacks, authorities have ruled out a major Islamist militant link after Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan claimed it was behind the botched bombing attempt.
