US-BLAST-OIL-ENERGY-POLLUTION-DISPERSANTS

Billy Payne from the Wildlife Care and Rescue group monitors seabirds for any sign of oil related injures, as cleanup operations continue for the BP Deepwater Horizon platform disaster, at Long Beach in Biloxi on May 10, 2010. BP restarted operations to stream dispersants directly into the main Gulf of Mexico oil leak despite fears the chemicals could themselves be harmful to the environment. A mile-long tube was fed down to the leaking pipe on the sea floor and directly shot the dispersant into the flow, guided by remotely-operated robotic submarines. The dispersant is meant to break down the oil so that, over time, the slick is reduced to smaller particles that biodegrade instead of being left as chunky, thick globs that can choke both wildlife and vegetation.
