US-BLAST-OIL-ENERGY-POLLUTION-CLEANUP
Louisiana National Guardsmen use Blackhawk helicopters to build a dam to protect the fragile wetlands known locally as "Bayou" near the town of Grand Isle, as work continues to protect the coastline from oil after the BP Deepwater Horizon platform disaster off Louisiana, on May 11, 2010. US military Black Hawk helicopters dropped sandbags in the middle of the channel near a barrier island in Louisiana in a desperate bid to keep the huge, growing oil slick at bay. Creating another obstacle in a bid to protect the area's fragile ecosystem -- home to pelicans, gulls and bounties of sea creatures vital to the local fishing economy -- National Guard troops organized the bags in a bid to plug up channels through which oil could seep into the wetlands. Officials have been racing to protect the coast line from the oil gushing from under the sunken Deepwater Horizon rig in the Gulf of Mexico at rate of 210,000 gallons a day. AFP PHOTO/Mark RALSTON
