KENYA-SPORT-FOOTBALL-RECONCILIATION

TO GO WITH AFP STORY BY ROBERT OLUOCH

This photo taken on June 01, 2010 shows workers sewing soccer balls at a cottage industry near Kenya's Eldoret town [approximately 300 kilometres north of Nairobi]. One of the hardest hit areas of Kenya by the 2007/08 electoral violence that saw more than 1,500 killed in tribal animosity, soccer in Lugari, an area that borders Eldoret, is being harnessed as a platform to foster unity and reconciliation among local youth drawn from varied tribes of Kenyans that inhabit the area. An intiative by inspired local residents called 'Maliza umasikini, maliza ukabila', [end poverty, end tribalism in swahili] is struggling to draw together the area's youth through soccer matches with barely any funding, using locally made kits and balls to create youth soccer teams, an intiative that residents say has managed to whittle down pulpable tension and animosity among youth from various tribes in the area.
