YEMEN-US-UNREST-RIGHTS-AMNESTY
In this handout made available by Amnesty International on June 7, 2010, unexploded BLU 97 cluster bomblet can be seen. The Tomahawk BGM-109D cruise missile would have carried 166 of these bomblets, which are designed to scatter over a wide area, acting indiscriminately when used in civilian areas. Many also fail to explode on impact, as in this photograph, but may explode if disturbed, making land dangerous for communities to use for months or years after attacks. A US-made Tomahawk missile carrying cluster bombs was behind the December 2009 attack on the rural community of Al-Maajala in Yemen's southern Abyan province that killed 55 people, most of them civilians, Amnesty International (AI) said.
