PERU-CONSERVATION-VICUNA-ROUNDUP-CHACCU
TO GO WITH AFP STORY BY ROBERTO CORTIJO
Residents of the southeastern highlands of Peru participate in a traditional "Chaccu" feast --the roundup and shearing of vicunas for their wool-- in Pampa Galeras, 450 km of Lima on June 19, 2010. Over 2,000 animals will be sheared this year as now communities have joined to look after thousands of wild vicunas --a protected camelid species that at one point was close to extinction due to poaching-- as prices for their raw wool can be sold for over USD 420 per kilo.
