Oil recovery efforts in the Gulf of Mexico could soon face the first tropical storm of the season, with heavy seas and winds spreading a massive oil slick that has already shut down beaches in Florida. The vast slick has already soiled the coastlines of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama, but could spell disaster for Florida, one of the world's top tourist destinations with more than 80 million visitors a year. The National Hurricane Center said the "first tropical depression of the Atlantic season forms in the Western Caribbean" and was expected to move into the Gulf later in the day with strengthening winds already clocked at 55 kilometers (35 miles) per hour.
