A family displaced by the 2002 Ivorian civil gets ready to sleep in their shack on November 24, 2009 in the Koumassi area of Abidjan. The temporary shelters for the internal war displaced, who fled fighting in the north and west after the failed September 2002 coup, became permanent in the slum areas of Abidjan and contribute to the uncontrolled expansion of the economic capital. According to a 2006 United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) study, at least 700,000 persons had moved south, and in 2008, the Norwegian Council for Refugiees estimated the internal displaced at 300,000 to 440,000 in Abidjan.
