GERMANY-POLITICS-PRESIDENT-MERKEL
German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle follow a session at the Bundestag (lower house of parliaments) on July 1, 2010, one day after presidential elections. Merkel was left licking her wounds after rebels in her coalition turned the routine exercise of picking a president into a damaging debacle that left her bruised and weakened. It took nine hours and three rounds of voting by a special assembly of MPs and public figures evening for Merkel's candidate Christian Wulff elected to the largely ceremonial post of head of state.
