ITALY-TRADITION-ANIMALS-HISTORY
The painting of the Palio (top center) is carried by the contrade of the Siena district during a procession from Il Campo square to Provenzano's church in Siena on July 1, 2010. Twice a year, on July 2 and on August 16, the main square in the peaceful Italian town of Siena becomes a medieval horserace track, as thousands screaming fans cheer for the giraffe, the caterpillar, the she-wolf, the goose or another of the 10 contrade that each year are selected to run the race.
