NIGERIA-OIL-SPILL-ENVIRONMENT-US
Project coordinator of United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) Michael Cowing speaks of the oil spill in the famous Nigerian oil-producing Ogoniland, which hosts the Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) in Nigeria's Rivers State on June 24, 2010. Life expectancy has plunged to between 40 and 45 years in the Niger Delta compared to 10 years higher in the rest of the country, experts say. "We could say that potentially a lot of Ogonis are impacted by the contamination," said Michael Cowing, project co-ordinator with the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) which is carrying out a scientific study of the extent of the oil pollution in the area.
