FILES-PAKISTAN-UNREST-MOSQUE

TO GO WITH Pakistan-Unrest-Mosque FOCUS by Jennie Matthew

(FILES) In this photograph taken on July 3, 2007, shows A Pakistani masked radical student of The Red Mosque as he fires a weapon towards paramilitary soldiers during an exchange of fire outside the mosque in Islamabad. Three years after Pakistan forces stormed the radical Red Mosque in Islamabad and cleric Abdul Aziz escaped in a burqa, his call for Islamic revolution is as fiery as ever, but hard times have hit. Army commandos stormed the building in a leafy boulevard on July 10, 2007, and more than 100 people were killed. The army demolished Jamia Hafsa, an adjacent girls' seminary and hostel. The operation opened the floodgates to Islamist attacks within Pakistan. Taliban and Al-Qaeda-linked groups have gone on the rampage, bombing their way around the country killing more than 3,500 people since then. AFP PHOTO/Aamir QURESHI/FILES
