INDONESIA-FORESTS-ENVIRONMENT-SPECIES-COMPANY-SINARMAS
This aerial picture taken on July 6, 2010, shows palm oil plantation operated by PT SMART, the palm oil unit of Sinar Mas in Kapuas Hulu in West Kalimantan province on Borneo island. Greenpeace made fresh allegations July 29, 2010 that units of Indonesian paper and palm oil giant Sinar Mas are clearing high conservation-value forests including habitats of endangered orangutans. Greenpeace said new investigations showed Sinar Mas subsidiaries logging peat forests and orangutan habitats in Borneo despite repeated promises to end such practices. In a statment SMART said the company does not plant oil palm trees on peat land, primary forests nor convert land with high conservation-value areas. AFP PHOTO / ROMEO GACAD
