INDONESIA-FOREST-ENVIRONMENT-COMPANY-SINARMAS
In this photograph taken during a media trip organized by the palm oil unit of Sinar Mas, PT SMART (Sinar Mas Agro Resrouces and Technology), on August 2, 2010 plant personnel talk at a newly built palm oil mill in one of the SMART concession areas in Ketapang district in West Kalimantan province on Borneo island. The mill that runs from energy produced by palm oil waste can process 800 metric tonnes of palm oil fruit per day producing crude palm oil. According to SMART the 22,300 hectare concession was developed from degraded forest land while 21 percent of the area has been devoted to high conservation-value areas of good forest. The Indonesian paper and palm oil giant Sinar Mas has come under attack in a Greenpeace campaign against the conversion of prime forest and peat land into palm oil and agro-industrial plantations. Sinar Mas has refuted the Greenpeace allegations of forest destruction and contends that the palm oil industry is crucial to alleviating poverty in Indonesia as it provides direct employment for about 4.5 million people and generated 10.4 billion USD worth of exports last year.
