FILES-INDONESIA-FORESTS-ENVIRONMENT-SPECIES-COMPANY-SINARMAS
(FILES) This file aerial photograph taken during a media trip organized by Greenpeace on July 5, 2010 shows an excavator cutting through a peat land forest while constructing canals at the palm oil plantation of PT SMART, the palm oil unit of Sinar Mas, in Ketapang district in West Kalimantan province on Borneo island. Greenpeace accused Sinar Mas of destroying the peatland and charged that units of Indonesian paper and palm oil giant are logging in high conservation-value forests including habitats of endangered orangutans. SMART president Daud Dharsono said, as he released a commissioned report in Jakarta on August 10, the canal was constructed to maintain a proper water level to preserve the peatland. The investigation carried out by Control Union Certifications and BSI Group cleared SMART of charges for widespread destruction of Borneo's forests as repeatedly alleged by Greenpeace.
