BRITAIN-VJDAY-COMMEMORATION


Prince Charles looks on during the VJ Day, (Victory over Japan Day) service to commemorate the 65th anniversary of victory against Japanese forces during the Second World War, in London on August 15, 2010. The Second World War in Asia began on December 7, 1941 after Japanese war planes bombed the US Pacific Fleet in Pearl Harbour, Hawaii. The Japanese forces surrendered on August 14, 1945 following a dropping of atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the Soviet declaration of war and the invasion of Manchuria. The next day, Wednesday, August 15, 1945 was celebrated as VJ Day. Britian suffered 90,332 casualties in the war against Japan. AFP PHOTO/Carl de Souza
