US-KATRINA-ANNIVERSARY-CRIME
TO GO WITH AFP STORY US-KATRINA-ANNIVERSARY-CRIME BY MATT DAVIS
New Orleans Police Sgt. James Young (L) assists on a call of a man beaten in a robbery ay Key's Food Store, as they patrol the Garden District in New Orleans, LA, August 16, 2010. Five years after Hurricane Katrina the New Orleans Police Department is struggling to regain community trust after a series of high profile officer indictments. Five officers were indicted in July over the shooting and burning of Henry Glover, a New Orleans resident, in the days following the storm. And a further 12 officers have now been indicted in relation to the Danziger Bridge incident, where officers allegedly opened fire on innocent civilians. Both incidents allegedly spawned elaborate cover-ups by the officers involved, including a meeting at a deserted former police station to agree on a story. Now the police department continues to face a hard time getting witnesses to crimes to come forward and convict people — just as the city continues to face problems with drug dealing and violent crime.
