US-KATRINA-ANNIVERSARY
Robert Green, Sr., places a wreath at the site where his mother and three year-old granddaughter Shanai died, on the fifth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, in the Lower Ninth Ward in New Orleans, Louisiana, August 29, 2010. He and his family clung for their lives on the roof of their home on Tennessee Street as it floated in the flood water on August 29, 2005, coming to rest near this tree. His granddaughter Shanai fell into the water and was swept away and killed. His mother died on the roof, her body fell into the water as well and they recovered her body several days later. Five years ago today water from broken levees flooded approximately 80 percent of the city. Today residents sing and pray and dance where once they were surrounded by raging flood water.
