Chilean cook Exequiel Rivera gives free meals to relatives of the 33 miners trapped in the San Jose mine in Copiapo, 800 km north of Santiago, on August 30, 2010. Rivers is one of the volunteers, among institutions, companies and individuals who help the relatives, rescuers and others working in the rescue operation at the mine. Engineers were poised to begin drilling Monday a rescue shaft to 33 Chilean miners, as loved ones sought to steel the resolve of the trapped men for an operation that could take until Christmas. The miners have developed fungal infections and body sores from the hot, dank conditions in the San Jose gold and silver mine and officials say some are already suffering from depression 25 days into their mind-numbing ordeal.
