US-HEALTH CARE

Medical student James Wallace of the University of Connecticut Health Center listens during an orientation prior to the free medical care clinic from the New Orleans Communities Are Responding Everyday (C.A.R.E.) Clinic, at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans, LA, Tuesday, August 31, 2010. This two-day free clinic, sponsored by the National Association of Free Clinics, is providing people from ages 6-65, with basic medical help such as testing for HIV, PSA tests for prostrate cancer, EKG's, pregnancy tests, basic vision tests and more. Participants in the free clinic will be connected with community resources so they can receive ongoing care through community resources. Approximately 83 percent of the patients who use the services of free clinics are employed but do not have health insurance. According to the Kaiser Family Foundation, Louisiana has almost 832,000 residents who are uninsured. That's 19.3 percent of the state's population. Many of these people have not seen a doctor in many years, especially since Hurricane Katrina five years ago.
