US-ATLANTIC-WEATHER-HURRICANE

Electric utility crews repair several toppled power lines in Nags Head in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, September 3, 2010 after Hurricane Earl blew through. Hurricane Earl dealt a glancing blow to North Carolina overnight and into Friday, lashing the coast with heavy winds and horizontal rain as the huge but weakening storm triggered warnings clear up to Canada. However, major swells were rolling along much of the US eastern seaboard, as communities from Virginia up to Maine braced for hurricane winds which had diminished only slightly, to 105 miles (170 kilometers) per hour, or category two strength, according to the Miami-based National Hurricane Center.
