US-ZOO-GORILLA
This picture provided by the San Diego Zoo shows Frank, a western lowland gorilla, celebrating his second birthday on September 4, 2010 at the San Diego Zoo. Staff at the Zoo made Frank a multicolored ice cake adorned with fresh fruit, hibiscus, and banana leaves for the special day. In the last year, Frank has nearly doubled in size and now weighs 40 pounds (18kg). He is also gaining confidence and can often be seen practicing his chest pounding. The youngster, who was once bottle fed by animal care staff, is now primarily on his own for dining and receives the same type of food items that the adults in his troop consume. There are two troops and one single western lowland gorilla at the San Diego Zoo, a species listed as critically endangered by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature.
