(FILES) In a picture taken on August 27, 2003 in Jouy-en-Josas, French Physics Nobel Prize Laureate Georges Charpak poses for a photograph. Charpak, 86, died in Paris on September 29, 2010. Charpak was born in the village of Dabrowica in Poland (modern Dubrovytsia, Ukraine) to a Jewish family of Polish/Ukrainian origin. Charpak's family moved from Poland to Paris when he was seven years old. He was made a member of the French Academy of Sciences in 1985. In 1992, he received the Nobel Prize in Physics "for his invention and development of particle detectors, in particular the multiwire proportional chamber". AFP PHOTO / MARTIN BUREAU
