CHINA-CULTURE-SOCIETY-GREAT WALL

TO GO WITH AFP STORY "China-Culture-Society,FEATURE" by Pascale Trouillaud

William Lindesay, a Briton who has spent nearly a quarter-century working on conservation for the Great Wall, poses with his latest book at his home in Beijing on September 15, 2010. Empty gin and whiskey bottles, crumpled beer cans and tattered food boxes are piled up after a rave in China -- perhaps not so unusual except the garbage is on the fabled great wall. Originally built as a fortress to protect the northern borders of the Chinese Empire from intrusions by numerous nomadic groups, what is known collectively as the Great Wall, which stretches from the ocean to the desert for over 8,800 km, is actually several walls which have been built from the 5th century BC through the 16th century and since then, rebuilt and refurbished at many locations, though many old and crumbling sections in remote areas still remain.
