PHILIPPINES-TYPHOON

The vulnerable poor who live in slum conditions under this bridge suffered flooding that destroyed their homes during Typhoon Ketsana in September 2009 and may suffer the same if flooding once again comes to Manila with Super Typhoon Megi. Megi, the strongest storm to pummel the country this year, slammed into the northern Philippines on October 18 causing landslides in mountainous areas, tearing roofs off houses, whipping up huge waves along the coast and killing at least one person. Megi was not expected to hit the nation's capital, Manila, directly but government forecaster Yumol warned the city's 12 million residents to remain on alert for heavy rain. AFP PHOTO/NOEL CELIS
