FILES-SWIM-PAN PACIFIC CHAMPIONSHIPS

Francis Crippen of USA competes on his way to winning a silver medal in the men's 10k open water final on the last day of the 2010 Pan Pacific Championships in Long Beach, California on August 22, 2010. Crippen died of a heart attack while taking part in the 10km Marathon Swimming World Cup in Fujairah in the United Arab Emirates, Al-Ittihad daily reported on October 25, 2010. Crippen's "death was the result of a heart attack," said Ibrahim Mohammed, the manager of the Fujairah International Marine Club, where the event was held, according to the daily. Swimming's governing body FINA said in a statement on Saturday that Crippen had died during the last leg of the event, but that the cause of death was still under investigation. The 26-year-old Crippen, bronze medallist in both the 10km event at the Rome worlds in 2009 and the FINA world open water championships in Canada this year, had ambitions to become the first American to medal in open water swimming at the 2012 London Olympics.
