Magda Andreescu (L), 42, her husband Sorin (C), 40, and their four-year-old daughter Diana (R) play in a park in Bucharest on October 28, 2010. After more than ten years of working as a researcher and curator at one of Europe's leading institutions of popular arts and traditions, the Museum of the Romanian Peasant in Bucharest, Magda earns about 250 euros a month, less than the 350-euro average salary in the country. Her husband, a graduate in history like her, earns the same. He has been teaching for 13 years in a secondary school. Like all civil servants in crisis-hit Romania, their salary was slashed by 25 percent in the summer after the centre-right government of Emil Boc endorsed a drastic austerity package to curb a rising public deficit.
