INDIA-ART-TOYS-MICHELLE OBAMA
Indian artisans makes wooden toys as they work in a workshop in Chennapatna around 75kms south west of Bangalore on November 11, 2010. Channapatna toys are a particular form of wooden toys that are manufactured in the town of Channapatna. This traditional craft is protected as a geographical indication (GI) under the World Trade Organization. Manufacturing stages include procuring the wood, seasoning the wood, cutting the wood into the desired shapes, pruning and carving the toys, applying the colours and finally polishing the finished product. Vegetable dyes are used in the colouring process to ensure that the toys are eco-friendly and safe for use by children. Some quaint wooden Channapatna dolls were one of the several Indian handicrafts that charmed US first lady Michelle Obama at the National Handicrafts and Handloom Museum during their visit in Delhi last week which brought smiles to the artisans here in expectation of improvement in sales.AFP PHOTO/Dibyangshu SARKAR
