Bandits from a local criminal group had broken into the house in the village of Kushchevskaya in the southern Krasnodar region, stabbed 10 of the diners to death and suffocated two others in a bloodbath that lasted one-and-a-half hours. The suspected mastermind of the massacre, Sergei Tsapok, was a member of the local council and headed a group known as the "Tsapki" who had used violence and intimidation to control the region's fertile land.
