GUINEA-POLITICS
New Guinea's President elect Alpha Conde arrives on December 3, 2010 at his home in Conakry, after the Supreme Court validated his victory with 52.5 percent of the votes early today, following a tense two-week wait under a state of emergency, imposed in the wake of three days of clashes after the initial announcement. Defeated presidential candidate Cellou Dalein Diallo accepts the election outcome and urges his supporters to do the same after a tense voting campaign marked by violent ethnic clashes. The 72-year old veteran opposition leader becomes the country's first democratically elected leader since independence from France in 1958, breaking a run of dictatorship and military rule in the poor but mineral-rich country.
