GUINEA-POLITICS
Guinea's defeated presidential candidate Cellou Dalein Diallo gives a press conference on December 3, 2010 at his home in Conakry, after the Supreme Court validated Alpha Conde's victory with 52.5 percent of the votes early today, following a tense two-week wait under a state of emergency, imposed in the wake of three days of clashes after the initial announcement. Diallo accepts the election outcome and urges his supporters to do the same after a tense voting campaign marked by violent ethnic clashes. The 72-year old veteran opposition leader becomes the country's first democratically elected leader since independence from France in 1958, breaking a run of dictatorship and military rule in the poor but mineral-rich country.
