TOPSHOTS-SUDAN-REFERENDUM-INDEPENDENCE

TOPSHOTS

A South Sudanese boy belonging to a cultural dance group uses moistened ground chalk to mark traditional tribe paintings on his face before his group performed at a cultural center in Juba on January 16, 2011. The group's presentation was part of a celebration after a week-long independence vote that was the centrepiece of the 2005 peace agreement that ended a two decade war. Foreign observer missions on Monday endorsed the credibility of south Sudan's landmark independence vote. The Carter Centre, which has the largest foreign observer mission, added that a vote for secession was "virtually certain" based on early results posted by polling stations, which were wrapping up their counts on Monday. An estimated two million people died in the 22-year civil war, the latest round in five decades of conflict between the south and the mainly Arab north that has blighted Africa's largest nation.
