The wrecked Timeball Station, a Victorian building that historically indicated the time to ships sailing by with its ball atop the stone tower, stands on a hill above the town of Lyttelton on February 23, 2011, a day after a deadly earthquake. Hundreds of rescuers swarmed over twisted and smoking buildings in a frantic search for survivors after New Zealand's catastrophic earthquake left nearly 400 dead or missing.
