Forces loyal to Ivory Coast strongman Laurent Gbagbo launched an attack on April 9, 2011 on the headquarters of his rival, UN-recognised president Alassane Ouattara, in a major escalation of the battle for control of the country. Witnesses told AFP the Golf Hotel in Abidjan, where Ouattara has been holed up since disputed November elections, came under attack starting from about 5:00 pm local time (1700 GMT).
