The Deepwater Horizon oil spill released almost 5 million barrels of crude oil into the Gulf of Mexico that flowed for three months. The complete environmental impact of the oil spill will not be known for years but the immediate impact of the oil, and the chemicals used to disperse it, resulted in the death of unprecedented numbers of wildlife. The Deepwater Horizon disaster was the largest accidental marine oil spill in the history of the petroleum industry.
