AFGHANISTAN-LIFESTYLE-POLITICS-SPORTS-BUZKASHI
TO GO WITH Lifestyle-Afghanistan-politics-sports,FEATURE-by Aymeric Vincenot
In this picture taken on February 17, 2011, Afghan horsemen compete over the carcass of headless cattle during Afghanistan's traditional game of Buzkashi on the Shamali Plain, some 15kms, north of Kabul. Although the brutal pastime with few rules is popular across Afghanistan in winter, this particular game involves the personal players of the country's vice-president, warlord-turned-politician Mohammed Qasim Fahim. This is also Fahim's personal pitch, and he watches from a stage at one end, elevated above the crowd, surveying the scrum of his two teams as they fight it out over several hours in snowy conditions.
