AUSTRALIA-ART-TRETCHIKOFF-AUCTION
Deutscher and Hackett art specialist Merryn Schriever holds a painting titled 'The Rice Lady' by Vladimir Tretchikoff which includes real grains of rice in its bowl and is expected to sell for between 100,000-150,000 Australian dollars (105,000-157,000 USD) at auction, in Melbourne on April 19, 2011. A Siberian exile who ended up living in South Africa, Tretchikoff was scorned by art critics as the king of kitsch with his portraits of exotic Asian women, with pillowy red lips and blue-tinged faces adorning homes and cafes in the 1950s and '60s and had a resurgence in the 1980s. His prints now sell for hundreds of and his most popular work, Chinese Girl (also known as Blue Lady), is claimed to be the best-selling commercial print of all time. In 2008, Tretchikoff's Fruits of Bali sold for 3.74 million rand (547,000 USD) at Sotheby's, in Cape Town, fetching more than 12 times its estimate. AFP PHOTO/William WEST
