US-HEALTH-AIDS-ANNIVERSARY

TO GO WITH AFP STORY HEALTH-AIDS-ANNIVERSARY-ELDERLY by Hannah Dreier

Homer Hobi, 65, was diagnosed with HIV in 1994. After several years of suffering with side effects from early-generation HIV medications, Hobi says his health is pretty good these days. He lives with his dog Allie in an apartment in San Francisco, CA. Hobi got his real estate license in December 2010 and is involved with an organization called RAMP which collects unused HIV medicine and delivers them to organizations overseas. Although he is generally healthy, Hobi says he pays close attention to his body. "HIV accelerates the progress of other diseases," he says. "You have to really monitor your health." Some 15 years into the era of protease inhibitors and drug cocktails, the first large group of AIDS patients to go through the aging process is facing a host of unexpected medical conditions, not to mention psychological and financial challenges they never thought they would live to see.
