URUGUAY-MINING-ARATIRI
A cattle farmer, opponent of an exploitation project of an iron strip mine set up by the Anglo Swiss group Zamin Ferrous, shows damages in a field made by mine workers in Valentines, center-west of Uruguay on May 11, 2011. The project involves extracting magnetite, a mineral with high iron ore content, with reserves established of 250 million tonnes and an estimated that this could reach 1.1 billion tonnes. Zamin Ferrous group, propierty of Indian businessman Pramod Agarwal, invested on the actual research phase USD 100 M, and plans a future expense of USD three billion on the biggest investment in the country's history involving the construction of a plant, a pipeline, pumping stations and Uruguay's first deepwater port terminal, with capacity to receive up to 18m-draft ships.
