ITALY-SWITZERLAND-FIRE-TUNNEL-SIMPLON
A man works on the wreckage of a freight train on June 13, 2011 near Iselle inside the Italian part of the Simplon tunnel damaged by a fire on last June 9. The fire broke out on a nine wagon train carrying household goods made of steel and porcelain from Italy to Germany. No-one was hurt. Officials opened the undamaged parallel tube a day after the fire. The affected tunnel, a key north-south rail link between Switzerland and Italy is reported to have suffered “major” damage, which will take several weeks to repair.
