US-SPACE-SHUTTLE-ATLANTIS
The space shuttle Atlantis lifts off on July 8, 2011 at Kennedy Space Center in Florida for the final flight of the shuttle program. The storied spacecraft is carrying a crew of four US astronauts toward the International Space Station (ISS) on a 12-day mission to re-stock the orbiting lab. The mission marks the end of an era in human spaceflight. The United States will have no spacecraft capable of taking astronauts to orbit, leaving Russia's three-seat Soyuz capsule as the sole taxi to the ISS. AFP PHOTO/Bruce WEAVER
