TO GO WITH AFP STORY by AURELIA END - The interim storage facility (Zwischenlager Nord, ZLN) is pictured on July 25, 2011 on the grounds of the former nuclear power plant in Lubmin near Greifswald, northeastern Germany. The plant, one of two nuclear power plants operated by the German Democratic Republic, was constructed between 1968 and 1979. The first reactor started working in 1973. A total of eight reactor blocs was planned, but the construction of only five was finished. Four of them provided energy, a fifth one was experiencing test runs only. The four operating reactors produced approximately 10 per cent of the GDR's power requirement. Following the German reunification, the plant was switched off in 1990 and finally closed down in 1995. Since then, it is being dismantled by the Energiewerke Nord, which is also running the interim storage facility. AFP PHOTO BARBARA SAX
