Mediation was under way to ease tensions on the New Caledonian island of Mare and roadblocks were dismantled on August 8, 2011 after four people were killed and 23 wounded in weekend clashes over air fares. Almost 100 police and military personnel have been deployed to the island, where violence surged on August 6, 2011 in a long-running dispute over air ticket prices as residents of a local district tried to remove protesters.
