India's industrial output grew 8.8 percent in June from a year ago, data revealed on August 12, 2011, showing unexpected strength in the face of aggressive interest rate tightening. The expansion in production by factories, mines and utilities was the fastest in three months and far exceeded analysts' forecasts of 5.5 percent growth. The figures spelled some relief for India's hawkish central bank, which is under pressure from businesses to pause its interest rate hiking cycle due to fears about industrial activity and rising global economic uncertainty.
