AUSTRALIA-INDIGENOUS-LANGUAGES-BRITAIN-FILES

(FILES) A file photo dated September 4, 2000 shows Monero Aborigines rehearsing their part in the Olympic opening ceremony in Sydney. The New South Wales State Library has launched a "search and rescue" mission on August 12, 2011 to revive lost indigenous languages, using the letters and diaries of early British settlers. A government survey in 2004 found that only 145 of the original 250 indigenous languages were still spoken in Australia and about 110 of these were severely or critically endangered.
