Semena, a ten-year old wounded Afghan girl is carried by US army medic Stephan Flynn to a Medevac helicopter of 159th Brigade Task Force Thunder to be airlifted to Kandahar hospital on August 21, 2011. The girl was wounded by shrapnel on both arms. Violence is at a record-high in the war, with more than 1,400 Afghan civilians killed in the conflict this year, up 15 percent on the first half of 2010, according to a recently released United Nations report.
