DRCONGO-ICC-WARCIMES-LUBANGA-FILES
(FILES) A file photo taken on June 5, 2003 shows a Union of Congolese Patriots (UPC) child soldier (L) patrolling in Iga-Barriere, some 25 kms north of Bunia in the Ituri province during a rally held by UPC leader Thomas Lubanga. The first-ever trial of the International Criminal Court started in The Hague on January 26, 2009 with Congolese militiaman Thomas Lubanga accused of war crimes for using child soldiers. Lubanga, 48, is accused of recruiting hundreds of children under the age of 15 to fight in the armed wing of his UPC in the civil war in the Democratic Republic of Congo between September 2002 and August 2003. Former Congo militia leader Thomas Lubanga is guilty "beyond any possible doubt" of conscripting child soldiers, the International Criminal Court heard from the prosecution in the closing stages of the trial.
