Cahoon (L), 23, helps Ivan Ireland, 45, wash down Ivan's daughter's bedroom in hopes of salvaging the house the day after they survived Hurricane Irene on Goose Creek Island on August 28, 2011 in Lowland, North Carolina. Water rose over six feet and into the Ireland's home where they escaped by fishing boat only to find nowhere to escape to. It is estimated only 10 of 500 residents on Goose Creek Island did not lose everything. Hurricane Irene made landfall in North Carolina creating a storm surge of up to eight feet in some areas of the Pamilco Sound. Sara D.
